• Interview is a process of conversation with victim,witness,complainant,suspect in order to gather information.

• Interrogation is a conversation process to extract the guilt from the suspect.
• Interrogation is the bi-lateral conversation in between interrogator and the suspect.
• Interrogation is a technique to extract confession from the suspect.

• It is non-accusatory in nature
• Purpose to gather information
• Interview is done early to an interrogation
• Interview is done in variety of environment
• Formal note is needed
• INTERROGATION
• Conversation in between interrogator and the suspect
• It is perfectly accusatory
• Purpose to extract the confession
• Interrogation is done when suspect seems to be guilty through interview
• Interrogation is done in controlled environment
• Formal note may not be needed
SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW
• Develop a plan of action
• Conduct interview to allow the subject to talk
• Let the subject speak what he likes to say
• Play a role of listener only
• No leading question
• Ask question to assist him only to narrate the story
• Take detail notes of statement
• No accusatory question
• Try to accuse the suspect convincingly
• Cut of denial by the suspect
• Redirect the protest
• Prevent mental withdrawal
• Watch for signs of receptivity
• Present a bad/good option
• Provide information reason to suspect him
ACCUSE THE SUSPECT
Ø Tell the suspect he is involved in the crime
Ø Show case facts and refer to evidence
Ø Observe the suspects reaction. If he denies involvement, restate the accusation
REDIRECT PROTEST
Ø Raise protest against the suspect denial
Ø Guilty usually presents defensive protest, try to break it
Ø Suspects have some factual basis to deny so try to refute those
PREVENT MENTAL WITHDRAWAL
• Move closer to use the suspect’s name to gain his attention
• Try to assist suspect to continue
WATCH FOR SIGNS OF RECEPTIBILITY
• Mostly non verbal=Head drop, Body leaning etc
• Others verbal symptoms
PRESENT GOOD/BAD OPTIONS
• One option is less acceptable, provide another one
• Suggest that his option is better that other
• Ask the suspect to confirm his suggestion
APPLYING FORCE
• First Degree = Arrest
• Second Degree =Interview/Interrogation
• Third Degree =????
• TORTURE
